The Electronically operated Grippa features a specially designed spindle lock operated and controlled by computer Dixon-Bate developed this product as part of a complete system that includes consoles, software, hardware and installation. Initially installed in Portsmouth University for use by staff & students, it also featured in a pilot scheme in Rotterdam for use by tourists. The electronic Grippa system provides the mechanical and electronic means to issue bikes as part of a “membership” scheme. With such schemes it is essential that the user accepts ownership whilst the bike is in their possession to ensure it is returned when no longer required and that it is protected from damage. The Dixon-Bate system provides information to the operators with regards to who have “hired” the bikes, when and if it has been returned. Additional management information includes status of each bike e.g does it need repair; are there sufficient bikes at each hire station, usage etc. The Electronic Grippa is not a “stand alone” solution, it has to be supplied as part of a complete system, which Dixon-bate is able to supply. The experience gained with this product has led to the development of the Velotron Locker system. Future installations will use a mixture of both electronic Grippa and Velotron lockers to provide parking for bikes either supplied by the operator or by the user themselves.
